REPORTS
FROM IRAQ
Downsizing in Disguise by
Naomi Klein (from the June 23, 2003 issue of The Nation)
"The streets
of Baghdad are a swamp of crime and uncollected garbage. Battered local
businesses are going bankrupt, unable to compete with cheap imports. Unemployment
is soaring and thousands of laid-off state workers are protesting in the
streets. "

Ms. News, June 30, 2003 "Zanib
Salbi, founder and president of Women for Women International, told the
Senate Foreign Relations Committee last week that with abductions of women
on the rise in post-war Iraq, more needs to be done to be sure women are

the World Trade Organization bringing to the forefront the institutions
and structural adjustment programs that now dictate development in much
of the Third World... http://www.awakenedwoman.com/helena_local.htm
